We believe that most of the matter in the universe is dark, i.e. cannot be detected from the light which it emits (or fails to emit). This is “stuff” which cannot be seen directly. Put another way, that’s the 90% of matter that we can’t actually see, but Cosmologists know must exist. There is material out there holding clusters of galaxies, gravitationally.These galaxies would otherwise fly apart by virtue of there own motion. |
